What I Learned in Sunday School
Today I taught second grade Sunday school for the first time. Here’s what I learned:
– A neighbor’s goose died
– A chicken tried to cross the road and was miraculously saved from an oncoming truck
– A grandma’s dog died
– A big sister ran away from home and was living in a shelter
– A mom was going away for a week
– A dad was in charge for the summer but didn’t know how to say prayers as good as the mom
– A dad was very sick
And that was just within the first 20 minutes.

When I used to substitute teach at Andy’s K-12 Lutheran school, sometimes I’d have to teach a religion class…or start first period (even if it was math) with a devotional, which was the case for most of the teachers. Most of the kids going to that school were distinctly NOT disadvantaged or underprivileged, but what got my attention is that they still had everybody’s problems: parent or sibling in Iraq, parent traveling to Timbuktu, some family member in the hospital, along with the usual dog/cat died, pray that I do well on my test, etc. What got me were the ones that wouldn’t state their needs out loud but would come pull on your sleeve later—and I’m talking jr high or early high school age—and whisper in your ear about mom in jail again or dad and brother with anger issues who threatened each other last night.
Too often we take for granted what a fabulous family we have. I sort of miss the occasional dose of reality to remind me of that.

Just found your blog and have really enjoyed it. It reminds me how much of “ordinary life” we miss being so far away in Ohio. I know you know how lucky you are to have family nearby. Hopefully we’ll be coming to Houston in the fall and can get together than.
